Forged Katanas and Wakizashis

Mantis is proud to introduce the most significant advancement in our katana line to date; the Performance Series. Featuring four distinct blade variations (Iaito, Katana, XL, and XL Light) each sword has been designed from the ground-up, with blade geometry specially adapted to the needs of each Japanese martial arts discipline. Currently offered in four formats (Tori, Musashi, Practical Plus, and Practical) with more to follow, the series feature a wide range of steel type and furniture styles to meet every budget.

The saya (scabbard) is hand-carved from  a light weight strong Japanese wood and then lacquered. The Kojori (end cap), Koi-guchi (throat) and Kuri-gata (eyelet) are made of hand-carved horn. All swords come with a sageo (belt tie).

Three Monkeys Praying Mantis Katana Oni Katana
The “Three Wise Monkeys” is a popular symbol of the “See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” proverb popular in many cultures around the world. The proverb itself is thought to have originated in China and was brought to Japan by a Buddhist monk, while the association with three monkeys appears to be a Japanese play on words. The Praying Mantis is a symbol of cunning and power in Japanese culture and is consequently a highly respected theme in Samurai swords. Built on our new L6/Bainite blade (detailed below) in the Shobu Zukuri style with Bo-Hi, and featuring superb koshirae, the Praying Mantis is a very desirable and functional piece. The subdued green silk ito and deep brown of the lacquered saya provide handsome contrast to the dark copper and golden accents of the tsuba, fuchi and kashira The Oni are mythical creatures from Japanese folklore similar to western demons or trolls. In modern culture they are beginning to move away from this menacing connotation into the role of guardian or protector, similar in character to gargoyles. Their power and ferocity, however, have not diminished. There is a Japanese saying which translates to “Oni with an iron club”, or to be of an invincible nature, a fitting association with the 29” L6/Bainite blade on which our Oni Katana is built. The blade features the geometry of our Performance Series for outstanding cutting ability.

Wind and Thunder Katana and Wakizashi Tsunami Sword Set Tea Culture Katana
Our Wind and Thunder katana is one of the heaviest swords made by Paul Chen. The blade is patterned after early Japanese swords when they were thicker and the kissaki (tip) was longer. The premier cutting sword from Paul Chen. Each piece is stylized with the renowned tomoe motif. The blades are hand-forged from T10 high carbon steel. In Japan the traditional method of serving tea is a celebrated art form in itself. This highly ritualized ceremony is an involved process, the most elaborate of which can last hours and is reserved for the most distinguished of guests.
